Data Search Hints

Go to http://olla.berkeley.edu/ornisnet/
You do not need to login or have an account to search the data.
1. Click Data Search
2. At bottom of page click Search Museum Data
3. At Select Type of Network Query leave as View Specimen Records. Click Build Query

The following example will get the ravens from North Carolina.
You may do better using Comparator “Contains” instead of “Equals,” since not all institutions use the same format. For collector names, use only last name and delete ones you don’t want once you have downloaded the data. Some institutions do not give collector name, tissue preparations, or other information they want to restrict.

The next page has several sections:
4. under Select Data Providers- click Select All Providers button (or choose just one institution, or choose several by holding control key while you highlight the ones you want)
5. under Select Query Conditions-
6. in Select a Concept- choose one of the delimiters (e.g. State/Province)
7. in Select a Comparator- choose one (e.g. Equals)
8. in the last blank field- type what you want to search for (e.g. North Carolina)
9. If you want to restrict it further, click Add Another Condition, choose and and select another concept, comparator, and type in term, repeating steps 6-8.
(for example,
6. in Select a Concept- choose Genus
7. in Select a Comparator- choose Equals
8. in the last blank field- type Corvus
click Add Another Condition, choose and
6. in Select a Concept- choose Species
7. in Select a Comparator- choose Equals
8. in the last blank field- type corax)

To restrict further, such as date or preparation type, repeat steps 6-8. This may not work as you think it should- some museums use “round” instead of “skin,” for example.
When you are done, in the next section Specify Result Set Structure
10. choose Full Specimen Result Set
11. in section Specify Record Limit delete the “10” and leave blank (unless you want to restrict the number of specimens given from each institution)
12. under Specify Timeout, leave blank
13. click Submit Query

14. When you get the results click View Data as Table to see data on screen. Scroll down to see results. If you have a Mac this will not work. Go directly to step 15, Download Tabular Results

15. To download results, click on Download Tabular Results.
16. Save your file.
17. Open in Excel and you can edit out records or columns you don’t want there.

To generate a map:
at step 10 choose Mapping Result Set, do steps 11-13 as above
18. choose View Map

Map options are given on the map page.
