General Information

MVZ purchases common-use software for PC, Mac, and Linux operating systems, as well as software that is needed for specific museum operations (e.g., curatorial and administrative). This includes software for:

(1) statistical analysis (JMP, Statistica)
(2) genetic analysis (PAUP, MacClade, ABI, Sequencher, etc.)
(3) sound/video analyses (RAVEN, SIGNAL, FinalCut Pro, etc.)
(4) bibliographies (Endnote)
(5) document exhange (Acrobat)
(6) media production (Photoshop, Illustrator).

As a general policy, we will not provide/upgrade operating systems and certain software applications (e.g., MS Office, Dreamweaver) for non-museum systems.

Recommended Free (or Shareware) Software

  • Google Documents, our favorite collaboration tool.
  • Zotero, an open-source research tool as an alternative to Endnote. It loads up in your Firefox Browser, allowing you to download citation and metadata directly from websites like Web of Science and other online reference sites. Brilliant.
  • Openoffice.org, a multiplatform, open-source office suite.
  • StarOffice, a Sun office productivity suite for Windows that includes word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation capabilities. Available from the UCB software support site with a CalNet ID.
  • Trellian WebPage, which has both html and "wysiwyg" (what you see is what you get, i.e., drag and drop, format as you go).
  • Boot Camp Public Beta, the beta version of software technology that allows you to run Windows XP on your Mac.

    Access to Software

    Access to software is determined by licensing agreements and number of copies and prioritization of research projects. All software purchases must be within the constraints of the MVZ budget. MVZ Curators and computer resource staff review as needed the support strategy for software, including a list of software that we will support and the number of licenses. Generally, software with a limited number of copies are installed on specific general use computers. We have a few concurrent licenses that allow multiple clients but limited concurrent (simultaneous) use.
