Campus Services

Computer services on campus:

CalNet ID: Your CalNet ID is an online "identity" required for access to a number of UC Berkeley online services. With an activated CalNet ID you can apply online for an email account, download campus-licensed software, access electronic information systems, and more.

See the CalNet ID site for more information and instructions for online activation of your CalNet ID. The MVZ CalNet deputy is Rafael Canela.

Email: All UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff are eligible for email accounts on CalMail, the campus email server. See the Berkeley Internet Link and CalMail sites for more information on obtaining a CalMail email account.

Graduate students and faculty are also eligible for an Academic Computing Research (ACR) fund account on the Socrates server for computational software, web publishing, file service and general UNIX computing. Mathematical and statistical software is also available for use. Apply online for a Socrates account using your activated CalNet ID.

Buying Computers and Software: Computer hardware and software may be purchased at an academic discount from The Scholar's Workstation (TSW), located southeast of MVZ in Hearst Field Annex, Bldg D1 (behind Sproul) (642-8424). Campus-licensed software (e.g., Norton Antivirus, Eudora) is available for free download from Workstation Support Services with an active CalNet ID. Additional software licenses for departmental use can be purchased through the campus Software Distribution (mathmatical and statistical packages; Adobe, Filemaker, Lotus, Macromedia, Microsoft, and Symantec products).
